ConnectCR will replace a washed out railroad bridge destroyed in the historic 2008 flood with an iconic new bridge to connect the NewBo and Czech Village neighborhoods, as well as connect both sides of the city.
Located between Czech Village and the NewBo area, the bridge will feature an LED-lighted tower to illuminate an otherwise dark part of the city. The tower will feature exterior and interior lighting and be visible for miles.
Park-like settings on both sides of the bridge will feature historic plaques to honor our area's strong connections with industry, agriculture, manufacturing, railroads, and immigrants who settled here.
The bridge's design features a split deck on the west side of the river to accommodate bikers, walkers, and visitors wanting to stop and enjoy the view of our beautiful city and the Cedar River. Those wanting to pass through will be encouraged to use the backside of the split deck.
The landing area to the east of the bridge has been expanded to include a park-like space with many amenities.
The landing on the west side will feature the tower and eye of the bridge. The bridge itself will be 23 feet wide, allowing for plenty of room for bicyclists, runners, walkers and families.
The ConnectCR Bridge will attract visitors from across the country. ConnectCR enhances the Cedar Valley Nature Trail and its connection to the American Discovery Trail and the Great American Rail-Trail, two national trails that go coast-to-coast and come through Cedar Rapids.
